Psychology behind the camera.
I was a psychologist before I became a photographer. We evolved to connect with other people, not with a camera lens, which is why so many of us freeze in front of one. I know how to get past that quickly, mostly by talking a lot and making bad jokes.
An understanding of business.
I spent six years at a global business psychology consultancy, working on projects for many FTSE 100 companies. I understand the business context behind the picture, how much is asked of senior people and how carefully they think about the way they come across.
A portrait photographer's eye.
In 2025 a portrait I created was exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery as a Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize finalist. That eye for light and expression goes into every headshot, and the whole team still matches in framing and finish.

The psychology of first impressions
WHY THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPH MATTERS
Before anyone meets you.
People decide whether someone looks competent and trustworthy within a tenth of a second of seeing their face. That first look usually happens before anyone meets you: on your website, in a pitch document, on LinkedIn, next to a quote in the press. Your people’s photographs are making a case for you, or against you, every time someone checks who they would be working with.
One face, many first impressions.
When researchers at Princeton and Columbia showed people several photographs of the same person, with only slight changes in expression, judgements of competence, trustworthiness and intelligence shifted as much as they did between different people. Finding the expression that is true to the person and right for their role is most of my job.
Warm and capable, in one frame.
Psychologists have found that we judge other people mainly on two things: warmth (do they mean well?) and competence (can they deliver?). Most corporate headshots manage one or the other. A good portrait shows both.
